Harness race horses with Corydon and Harrison County connections did not fare so well last week at the Shelby County fairgrounds in Shelbyville or at Hoosier Park, the pari-mutuel track in Anderson.
Only two horses with local ties collected purse money checks at Hoosier Park during the week, with all the other starters finishing in sixth place or lower in their races.
The promising 2-year-old filly pacer Soul Kitchen was fourth in her heat of Leg 1 of the Indiana Sire Stakes last Wednesday. She was born and raised south of Lanesville on the Alvin Walther farm and is now owned by a group of horsemen from Ohio and Indiana.
On Saturday night, the 2-year-old trotting colt Pilgrim’s Image was third in his race for sire stakes eligible freshman trotters. He is from the Simon Girod stable of Salem and trains occasionally at the Harrison County Fairgrounds in Corydon.
Also last Wednesday at Hoosier Park, the older pacer Hayswood Ron from Hayswood Farm of Corydon was sixth in his race, and another Walther-bred freshman filly pacer, Brandon’s Rose, was seventh in her sire stakes leg.
On Thursday, the sophomore colt pacer Cruisin Virgin, owned by Walther, was eighth in his heat at Hoosier Park. On Friday, Rockin TJ, an older pacing gelding raised on the Walther farm but now raced by Pennsylvania interests, was 10th and last in his race. And, on Saturday night, the Conrad stable had two seventh-place finishes from their pacing stallion Uncaged and their older pacing mare Primo Extremo.
At the Shelby County oval, Indiana Sired Fair Circuit racing took place Monday, July 20, and Tuesday, July 21. The Conrad stable had several starters on July 20 and most collected paychecks by finishing fifth or higher: Catholic Girl was second in her race for freshman pacing fillies, and Topville Celebrity was fifth in her race in the same division. Freshman colts were led by Conrad’s Ultimaroca, who won. Conrad had two fourth-place finishers in that division with Onoitsmymothernlaw and Jack Wacker, as well as a seventh place for Keep’s Admiral. Conrad got second money among trotters with Mt. Swanmore, a 3-year-old colt.
On July 21 at Shelbyville, the Girod Stable picked up second-place money with the freshman trotting filly JL Dance With Me.
Conrad’s trotters did well but did not win: Amigo Style was seventh, and Boom Pow was third. Conrad’s pacers on July 21 included Moscato with a second-place check and Bludhaven, who finished sixth in his race.
From Hayswood Farm of Corydon, Hayswood Linda was sixth in her race and Hayswood Pacifica was seventh and last in her race.
The excitement of county fair racing on half-mile tracks includes doses of post-position draw and racing luck, and both abundantly influenced the outcome of Shelbyville races. The speed and excitement of this competition is set to come to the Harrison County Fairgrounds in Corydon on Aug. 19 with an afternoon of racing scheduled.
