The Great Michigan Beer Toast happened virtually on July 23, when we spent an hour online celebrating all things Michigan beer, with a host of guests from all over the state. July is officially Michigan Beer Month, and with the current situation, we felt it was more important than ever to support our local breweries, who bring so much to our communities and our economy.
“Michigan Beer Month is the perfect time to enjoy a pint of local beer and reflect on what really matters,” said Scott Graham, executive director of the Michigan Brewers Guild.
That is exactly what we did, gathering together online on the MLive Facebook page.
Our event kicked off with a rousing rendition of the Michigan Beer Fight Song, led by Ted Badgerow and the Ypsi Alehouse singers.
We then talked to Graham about what has been happening this year in the brewing industry, including the cancelling of the Spring, Summer and U.P. Beer Fests.
Barb Baker, vice president of Fermenta, joined us for an IPA tasting. Fermenta is a non-profit trade group started by women that works to build diversity, opportunities, education and networking within the fermented food and beverage industries. They provide scholarships and educational events throughout the year across Michigan.
Brian Tennis from Michigan Hop Alliance took us to his Northern Michigan hop yard, where we learned how hops grow, and that they are called bines, not vines. Some of the hundreds of breweries that feature his hops are Arbor Brewing, Ascension, Block Brewing, City Built, Ellison, Fetch, Final Gravity, HOMES, Motor City Brewing Works, Mountain Town, Speciation Ales, Stormcloud, Trail Point, and Urbanrest.
We played “Stump the Brewer” with Joe Short and Scott Newman-Bale from Shorts Brewing Company in Bellaire, and learned that Newman-Bale hates blue cheese, and Short loves his Nicie Spicie beer.
Tim Willie from Alliance Beverage provided some awesome beer pairings, including beers to drink while enjoying Michigan summer. Scroll down to see all of his suggestions.
We closed out our night with a group toast with Graham, Isaac Hartman of New Holland Brewing, and current president of the Brewer’s Guild, and David Ringler of Cedar Springs Brewing and current vice president of the board. Michigan Brewers Guild “Great Beer State” podcast executive producer and host Fred Beultmann led us out of the hour with a lovely rendition of the Michigan Beer Fight song performed with a tuba.
You can watch our toast to Michigan beer below, and celebrate Michigan beer not just during July, but all year long.
