TEXARKANA — Despite many traditional local Memorial Day events being canceled because of COVID-19, some local veterans organizations are still planning to decorate two local cemeteries with U.S. flags.
Earlier this month, the Texarkana Area Veteran Council agreed to have veterans place U.S. flags at military veteran burial sites, starting at about 9 a.m., May 22, at Chapelwood Memorial Gardens on Kings Highway in Nash. That same day and time, veterans will also conduct flag placements at Memorial Gardens on U.S. Highway 67 east of the Texarkana Regional Airport. They will then collect the flags from both cemeteries on May 26.
Besides the flag placements, Vietnam Veterans of America's Chapter 278 will hold their 24th Annual Veterans Information Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., June 20, at Texas Elks Lodge 2771 at 3702 New Boston Road.
As in years past, the information fair is free and open to the public. The event's purpose is to assist veterans and military personnel currently serving, as well as National Guard personnel and their families, in getting information from a variety of sources on U.S. Veterans Administration benefits and programs.
Agencies represented at the fair will include the Texas Veterans Commission, Texas Work Force Administration, the local Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic, representatives from the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center in Shreveport and Little Rock's Veterans Center as well as from the Social Security Administration.
Other agencies represented will be the Arkansas Veterans Affairs Office, the Arkansas Work Force Center, and veterans counselors and service officers from both Texarkana College and Texas A&M University-Texarkana. Also expected are representatives from the Area Agency on Aging, Hospice of Texarkana, East Funeral Home and Texarkana Funeral Home
