There is a nationwide meat shortage with the coronavirus pandemic causing closures at meat processing facilities across the country. That now has people heading to local butcher shops.
The Big Body Butcher on Central Avenue opened its storefront amid the coronavirus pandemic. Owner and head butcher Cody Shields said he was not sure what to expect.
"With this opening up, it brought in another wave of customers. I didn't think we'd be this busy," said Shields.
Shields has his business online for several years, but said he opened the storefront when he knew people were walking into empty store shelves at grocery stores.
"That's the real reason we opened up, because we went to the grocery store and saw that there was no meat, so we kind of threw this together," said Shields. "Got all the permits and everything and opened up."
Shields said most people buy the basics like ground beef and chicken. However, he said his biggest seller remains wagyu beef. He said his supply chain is currently fine and the only meat they are having some trouble finding is pork.
"We source meat through local vendors," said Shields. "We also try to use local farms as well for our pork and our beef especially our wagyu. We do use a lot of local farms, but the prices have gone up."
In Schenectady, Avon Meat Market on Van Vranken Avenue said they have been the busiest they have been in 30 years. They said their supply chain is fine and continue to get their weekly shipments. They said they get more than 100 new customers a week.
Shields said it's nice to see a boost in support for local butchers.
"You have a fresh product, you know where it comes from and you're not buying something from a store that's wrapped in Saran Wrap," said Shields.
The Big Body Butcher is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
