Give Local York director Meagan Given was all smiles at the end of the day on Friday.

York County's annual 24-hour giving campaign looked a little different this year. Due to the coronavirus, this year's community philanthropy program was conducted entirely online.

That did not stop people and organizations from donating. Give Local York raised $3,551,930 with 11,101 donors.

"It was an amazing day," Given said. "This year we had a goal of having 10,000 donors make a goal on gift day, and we ended up surpassing that number."

This year Give Local York did not want to focus on the financial goal but the amount of money raised exceeded the previous year's campaign.

"(Friday) was a real testament to the generosity of this community, and we got to see how York County really steps up to support each other," Given said.

For the past two years, this campaign was held outside during the First Friday events, but people always had the option of giving online.

"Unfortunately we weren't able to be together with the community this time, but we knew that people would still show their support," Given said.

Seeing how much support the campaign had yesterday was an overwhelming feeling for Given.

"I couldn't help but to smile and have this feeling of joy to see how successful the campaign was," she said.

When Given first noticed that they exceeded the number of donors that they set a goal of having, she said she was ecstatic.

"We had the ability to monitor things in real time during the campaign, and I always thought that the 10,000 donors was always attainable," she said. "We had a pretty good feeling early in the day that the number we set was going to be reached or that we were going to exceed it."

Give Local York partnered with Weary Arts Group to provide a virtual, local concert, and  the Community Progress Council held a karaoke contest and other online events Friday.

When the coronavirus outbreak made its way to the United States, Givens had numerous discussions on making the day an online only event.

"We're very fortunate that Give Local York is primarily an online giving day," she said. "Over the past two years, the day has become a celebration in York County and we purposely chose to host the event during the first Friday of May because First Friday is a big event downtown."

In late February Given said the board started having conversations and were communicating with nonprofits to let them know what could possibly take place.

"Everyone was very cooperative and the organizations were on board with any changes that were going to be made," Given said. "I'm just really glad that the day was an overall success."
