GRAND RAPIDS, MI — If you’re craving some authentic homemade Italian food and a bundle of garlic breadsticks, Salvatore’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria on Grand Rapids’ West Side will fit the bill.
The restaurant, which has been a family-owned spot since 1976, features every classic Italian dish imaginable, plus seasonal specialties.
“It’s a quaint little family restaurant,” said Jim Tinervia, who owns Salvatore’s with his brother. “We’re friendly to young families, professionals, it’s very low-stress and low key. It’s just a nice little place to unwind.”
Located at 654 Stocking St. NW in Grand Rapids, the restaurant’s menu offers bruschetta, salads, homemade breadsticks, oven-baked sub sandwiches, Sicilian steaks and other Italian favorites. The pasta menu includes ravioli, manicotti, cannelloni, lasagna, linguine and fettuccine alfredo.
A customer favorite is the chicken parmigiana, which can be ordered on its own or as part of the “parmigiana platter,” which includes chicken, eggplant and meatball parmigiana, all served with a side of spaghetti.
The family restaurant prides itself on its recipes, including homemade breadsticks and sauces. Most of the recipes come from the Tinervia brothers’ mom, Zina Tinervia.
“Our marinara sauce and all our sauces are made with our own recipes,” Tinervia said. “We cut all our meats by hand, we prep and bread it all by hand here. The recipes are my mom’s and our family’s ancestors.”
Tinervia’s favorite item on the menu is the manicotti, made with homemade crepes and filled with either beef or ricotta cheese, then baked in tomato sauce and mozzarella and served with garlic bread and choice of soup or salad.
The Tinervia family immigrated to the United States from Sicily in 1971 and has been serving Italian food to the Grand Rapids community for over 45 years.
“We’ve been in the same spot here for generations,” Tinervia said. “When we first started out, that generation’s children became our customers and so now we’re literally three generations of West siders that have been coming to us. We know a lot of the families in the area and we’re very family-oriented.”
For first-timers at Salvatore’s, Tinervia recommends the “Taste of Grand Rapids” pizza, which has won both people’s choice and best pizza awards in West Michigan. The pizza is topped with ham, fresh basil, onions, sausage, Sicilian sauce, Romano cheese and a spice blend.
Most of the menu items are $17 and under and half-orders of pasta are $12 and under. Affordable prices are a focus for the restaurant.
“Our cuisine, we try to make the quality of a white tablecloth restaurant with the budget of a blue collar family,” Tinervia said. “We try to serve the area as best we can.”
A full menu is available online at salvatoresgr.com. Along with dine-in and carryout, the restaurant also offers catering. Salvatore’s is open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m.-10 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m.-8 p.m. Sunday. Contact the restaurant at 616-454-4280.
