JACKSON, MI – After working out of his home for two years, Randy Treacher decided it was time to expand and open The ABC Bakery in a brick-and-mortar shop.
The new location of The ABC Bakery opened in the Jackson area in early October.
Treacher, a retired Jackson County administrator, said he realized he needed to move after too many people were making requests to come in and see what he was baking but weren’t buying his products.

“We knew we were missing a lot of business,” Treacher said. “We think a brick-and-mortar (shop) can be successful because people are looking to come and see what you have.”
Seeing the lack of a bakery in the Horton Road neighborhood also made Treacher consider opening a shop, he said.
“If you go to any small town, Marshall or Jerome or even Leslie for breakfast, you’ll find a bakery that I consider a traditional bakery that has cookies and cupcakes and stuff sitting in the case,” Treacher said. “So, we thought, ‘Well, gee, that’s a kind of a niche and a need, especially in this part of town.’”
So far, owning the business has been great, but a very different experience from working at home, he said. Business has been significantly higher, but it has been a learning experience when it comes to putting more goods on the shelves and getting some help, he said.
The ABC Bakery is still a new business, so Treacher is asking customers to be patient as they adapt to the big change. He even asks customers to check out the website and call ahead to ensure what they’re looking for has been made, he said.
Cakes, cupcakes, pies, breads, rolls and other baked goods can be found at the bakery, either for pick up or for order.
Some of the biggest sellers so far are the scones, which sell fast in the morning, Treacher said, and the large cookies, which sell in the evening.
Peanut butter, M&M, oatmeal raisin and classic chocolate chip are big cookie sellers.
“When I make a batch of cookies it’s 28 pounds,” Treacher said. “That’s how much I have to make to have at least four or five batches a week.”
Surprisingly, bread also has been popular with customers, along with doughnuts, which are a new experiment for Treacher, he said.
The ABC Bakery, 1931 Horton Road, Suite 5, is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. It is closed Wednesday.
