CONCORD, MI – While traveling through the village of Concord, people can find a hidden gem for burgers and pizza at The Cadet Tavern
Thad and Tony Brooks have owned The Cadet Tavern since 2017, but the bar has been a locally-owned joint much longer. The brothers bought the bar because they wanted to own the small-town establishment, Thad Brooks said.
While he has lived in Arizona since 1983, Thad frequently returns to Concord, he said, and the bar is a small part of his hometown he keeps close to him, even if he’s across the country.
“It’s been here forever. When the original owner wanted out, we went down that path and said, ‘Let’s do it,” Thad said. “As (we) grew up here and came down here for pizzas when we were kids, we thought it would be cool to have a piece of it.”
People enjoy coming to The Cadet Tavern to experience the history of the building, Thad said. It was built in the 1850s and was used as a hotel. The basement even still houses signs from the prohibition era, Thad said.

During prohibition, the bar served as an ice-cream parlor, with liquor secretly served in the basement. The stairs still are under the kitchen.
“It’s kind of one of those unique old buildings,” Thad said. “The bar right here was the check-in counter (from the hotel).”
It’s the food, however, that brings people from all over to The Cadet Tavern. Burgers and pizzas are the stars of the menu, and the portions are big, Thad said.
“The toppings are just ridiculous with how much we have on them,” Thad said of the pizzas. “It’s a pizza full of everything – depending on what you get.”
The Daniel Burger, which is served on Texas Toast, with mozzarella and American cheese, bacon, grilled jalapenos, and onion also stands out on the menu.
“Our burgers are awesome,” Thad said.
Traditional items, like wings, salads, hot dogs and sandwiches, can also be found. The Cadet Tavern also has some unique appetizers, like the Skull Skins, which are deep fried pizza crust with garlic and nacho cheese.
The Cadet Tavern, 115 N. Main St. in Concord, is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday and noon o 8 p.m. Sunday.
More information can be found on The Cadet Tavern’s Facebook page.
