Michigan’s Best Local Eats: You’ll find more than just drinks at downtown Jackson’s Town Bar - MLive.com

JACKSON, MI – It’s the Jackson dive bar everyone can call home.

The Town Bar has been a fixture downtown basically forever. It was a family-owned bar for nearly 50 years until Phil and Ginger Field decided to sell the business and retire to the other side of the bar. Dan Watts, the 33-year-old owner of Tri-County Water in Blackman Township, bought it.

Many renovations have been done, and the Town Bar is vastly different from a few years ago. However, the same friendly atmosphere still exists in the place.

“There’s different groups of people, different ages,” Manager Katti Chivington said. “There are people from out of town that find us because they’re searching bars and it pops up and looks like a little hole-in-the wall type bar that everyone is welcome in.”

While Town Bar is mainly known for its bar scene, the food is something to not ignore, Chivington said. Food and drink specials can be found throughout the week.

On the menu, you’ll find basic fried food, wraps, tacos, wings and more. Popular items are the fish tacos, pulled park nachos and the chicken wrap, Chivington said.

“It’s made well, scratch, in-house,” she said. “We want to make it a destination for people to come in and not just get drinks.”

Drinks, however, still are popular among the Town Bar crowd. Orange tea shots, usually made with Jameson Orange, Peach Schnapps and sour mix, are what almost everyone orders on the weekends, Chivington said.

“It’s super fruity and light,” she said.

Town Bar, 121 E. Cortland St., is open from noon to midnight Sunday through Thursday, and noon to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. More information can be found on Town Bar’s Facebook page.
