The town and county governments in Orange County will be closed with various services altered as part of the New Year’s holiday.

Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough all alerted residents to their winter holiday service schedules, which include closures, different hours and more through this weekend. Here are the aspects of the community’s local governments that will see changes:

Town of Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill residents will see several services disrupted, which is common around the winter holiday season.

Residential trash collection and curbside recycling will not be affected, however, yard waste will not be collected the week of December 26–January 1. Christmas tree collection for mulching will begin in January.

On Friday, December 31, Chapel Hill Transit will operate on a Sunday schedule with no U route service. Additionally, the NU route will end at 7 p.m. The transit system will be closed on New Year’s Day.

Town’s administrative offices will also be closed on December 31. Other town closures include the Chapel Hill Public Library on New Years Day alongside all Parks and Recreation indoor recreation and aquatic facilities.

Parks, greenways, trails, dog parks, playgrounds, picnic shelters, and outdoor park amenities will be open.

Town of Carrboro

Similar to Chapel Hill, the Town of Carrboro’s administrative offices will be closed Friday, December 31 for the New Year’s holiday.

Household trash collection will be affected on Friday. The new collection date is on Monday, January 3.

Town of Hillsborough

The Town of Hillsborough is also closing its town offices and buildings on December 31 for the holiday.

Garbage collection will be rescheduled. Routes that would normally be served on Friday, December 31 will instead be served on Monday, January 3. For more information, see the town’s curbside collections calendar.

Orange County Government

In addition to the town governments, the Orange County government and its facilities will be closed December 31 in observance of New Year’s Day. The county will resume normal operations on Monday, January 3.

These county closures on Friday include the Orange County Tax Office. To ensure credit for 2021 tax purposes, Thursday, December 30 will be the final day to make in-person payments.

Local transit will also be affected on December 31. Orange County Public Transit will operate limited service serving the in-county dialysis route only.

Additional closures include the Orange County Public Library from Friday, December 31 through Sunday, January 2.

County vaccination sites will remain closed through the New Year’s holiday.
