Grand Forks head coach Brent Newman: “Today was another good day of competition coming off a pretty good performance last night. Being an invite with a non-typical even format, our goal again today was for the guys to just swim, have some fun, and try to put into practice those things we have been stressing these first 3 weeks of practice. They did not disappoint. Every guy on the team had success today whether it was an improved time or improved technique or improved attitude and competitive drive. Todays meet was short and fast and they really had to pay attention to their events and heats along with making sure they got stretched out and prepared for the next race. Adaptation to this quick turn around will certainly help them down the road as we have quite a few more dual competitions than we are typically used to in any given season. We are really happy with where everyone is at to start out this season. We have a lot of great things they are doing already and we have certainly identified those things they will need to be working on in the immediate future. Overall we have a relatively young team with a good portion of newcomers and they are motivated to do well and carry on the culture we are establishing in this program.”

Grand Forks head coach Brent Newman: “Tonight was our first opportunity to get a good look at where our team sits to begin the new season. We have quite a few new guys on the team that are both new to the KnightRiders as well as new to the sport and we were not quite sure what we would get from them for our first competition. We were not disappointed with the guys’ effort this evening and they have each individually set a mark for their training into next week and the Christmas break. Caleb Larsen told us early in the fall, before the season started, that he wanted to focus solely on diving this season; we respected his drive and commitment to that singular goal, and tonight he took the first steps necessary to earn that coveted state qualifying score in that event. He improved his best 6 dive score last year by 17 points and we have really been impressed with his focus and attention to detail during both practice and now tonight at our first meet. The growth this young man has shown since he first started with the team 2 seasons ago is amazing and he has a lot of time left with us to continue on this trajectory. He is becoming a leader for us.

Aiden Johnson – showed up for the first day of practice this season and seemed to have grown another 3 feet tall from last year! He has been putting that extra length to good work in the water both physically and mentally as he almost seems to be a new person when it comes to his focus and drive to improve. Today was his first attempt to show what he is capable of, and we are very encouraged with what we might be able to accomplish this year. He swam an almost 10 second PR in the 200 free and was just 3 seconds off his personal best in the 500 from last year and is now only 7 seconds away from qualifying. More importantly, he raced against some quality Davies competition. He didn’t back down and was really strong throughout his race.”

Grand Forks Central head wrestling coach Jeff Welsh: “We wrestled two good duals against Wahpeton and West Fargo. We dominated on the mat against Wahpeton and while we wrestled well against West Fargo, we managed to lose several toss-up matches. We think the score will be much closer the next time we wrestle West Fargo.”
