FLINT, MI -- Somas Ramen in downtown Flint offers authentic Japanese ramen take-home kits for customers to enjoy the meal at a later time.
The business is located inside the Local Grocer, 601 Martin Luther King Ave., where customers can pre-order hot bowls of ramen or take a ramen kit to go.
Jeffrance Ford, owner of Somas Ramen, garnishes each bowl with spices and vegetables like cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, green onions, turnips and cilantro.
The shoyu ramen, or soy sauce-based broth ramen, is then topped off with noodles, a soft boiled egg, chicken, or salmon.
Ford became interested in making ramen after working at a local business that sold the Vietnamese dish pho and from watching anime content.
Prior to making the dish, he admittedly had never had a bowl of ramen.
“I didn’t know how it was supposed to taste, but I knew how it was supposed to look,” Ford said. " I didn’t know how to make the noodles, I didn’t know how to make the broth. I spent a lot of money and time trying to understand the ins and outs of what makes a bowl of ramen, a bowl of ramen.”
Around two years ago when he finally got the perfect recipe down, he gave away free bowls at first.
When the samples became popular, Ford started selling the bowls throughout Genesee and Oakland counties.
For 2021, Ford hopes to have his own space to sell his ramen bowls.
