ANN ARBOR, MI -- One of downtown Ann Arbor’s longtime restaurants has not been the same since the coronavirus pandemic led to indoor dining restrictions. But the townie bar is doing what it can for the community.
Old Town Tavern opened in 1972 when Jerry Pawlicki opened what became a downtown local music venue, bar and restaurant that his son Chris Pawlicki now runs. But business has been slow due to the pandemic restricting indoor dining.
“It’s honestly a miracle. Part of it is because Jerry, who started Old Town in ’72, owns the building. He helps a little bit in really bad months,” Manager Theresa Zavisa said. “We’re so prideful it’s a community townie bar.”
On Sundays, Old Town Tavern would host local bands and for a couple of years on Wednesdays, they would host jazz nights. But now, customers can only come for the food or drinks.
Nearly every ticket has a burger or chicken tenders on it, Zavisa said. They are Old Town’s most popular items.
Reubens are also a huge seller, she added. Customers can choose pastrami and sauerkraut, turkey and slaw, or tempeh and sauerkraut, topped with melted Swiss on grilled marble rye bread with a side of Thousand Island dressing.
Old Town also launched new dinners during the pandemic. Customers can choose from meatloaf, fried chicken or fish and chips.
“We had them as specials and they sold really well. But since we’re much slower, we’re able to have the fried food on our menu,” Zavisa said.
They also offer to-go beers on draft.
Zavisa also recommends any of the salads and the chicken caesar wrap, which has chilled breast meat with romaine, parmesan and dressing in a flour tortilla.
“Almost everything the guys make in the kitchen is done from scratch. That to me, it feels a lot cleaner,” Zavisa said.
Old Town previously sold pies for dessert but since they have not sold well during the pandemic, they offer cookies they can easily bake daily.
“We are so blessed with the Ann Arbor community. We would not be around without them,” Zavisa said. “We know their children, we’ve seen them get married, we’ve given them their first beers. I’ve seen their kids come in for their first beers.”
Old Town Tavern is located at 122 W Liberty St. in Ann Arbor. It’s currently open Saturday through Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Call 734-662-9291. More information at http://oldtownaa.com/.
