A Network Engineer in the Ericsson family - Ericsson

The start of my journey

After my graduation from university, I joined the company as a At the time, I can remember having a bunch of questions running through my mind. I was wondering if I would be respected and valued as a young professional, if I would be given a platform for growth, and if I would even be accepted by a team full of more senior professionals. But within a few weeks, I realized I didn’t have to worry about these things at all, and pretty soon, I got to experience firsthand how wonderful it is to work as an innovation game changer here at Ericsson.

A real sense of purpose

The best part of my job is that I get to contribute to the development of new technologies in the mobile world that are making peoples’ lives better, and having a hand in making this kind of positive impact on the world fills me with a real sense of purpose in my daily work.

While, as a Network Engineer, my job mainly entails fine-tuning network parameters to consistently reach retainability, accessibility, and mobility KPIs, the live network changes that I perform have a significant effect on improving overall network performance. Thanks to this, users around the world are able to experience better connectivity and faster download speeds — something I believe is especially important in these times, when so many users need to work from home as a result of the pandemic. With high-performing networks, users can attend conference calls without interruption, connect with their friends and families digitally, attend virtual classrooms and training sessions without a hitch, and even watch movies online without suffering through buffering. As a Network Engineer, I’m so happy to be one of the people helping to make this happen.

Welcomed for who I am

When I first start my workday and prepare for the tasks ahead, I feel contentment and happiness (yes, even in the morning!) to be working here, mainly due to the genuine sense of belonging I feel towards this place and all my colleagues. It’s important to me that I’m in a place where I feel that I can be myself and be accepted, and that’s just what I have here.

In fact, I can still remember that on my first day here at Ericsson, I was fully welcomed and accepted by my peers despite the fact that I was coming from a background, country, and culture that was totally different. That really stuck with me. Even today, I can feel the inclusion in our multicultural, multilingual environment, be it in the wide range of festivals we celebrate together or the different talents that are valued and respected here.

Room for growth and innovation

Though my primary job is, as mentioned, to optimize and fine-tune network parameters, I get to enjoy a range of opportunities to grow and explore my abilities at the company.

One of my favorite personal achievements so far is how I was able to go from being a new member of my team to an employee engagement leader! Having started off as a team communicator — where I spent my time drafting creative emails to encourage employee participation — I soon became a key contributor, frequently sharing insights and discussing lots of new ideas. Seeing my active participation, it wasn’t long before my manager nominated me for a position where I could lead another team. The rest is history! This not only showed me that my talent was valued and recognized but also gave me an opportunity to really prove myself and see what I could do.

When I think back to this, I see how important it is for an organization to provide its people with avenues for self-improvement. I’m happy that I have that here.

Bridging the gap

Something else that I really love here at Ericsson is that the gap between regular employees and management is minimal, with helpful, transparent feedback (be it positive recognition or constructive criticism) given to all regardless of their levels of experience.

Every year, individual performance assessments (IPAs) are conducted for all employees, where honest feedback related to employee performance is given by line managers. In these one-on-one discussions with our managers, we’re given the chance to address any challenges being faced in our daily work or in specific projects, get feedback on our job performance, and discuss career progression goals to map out the next steps in our professional journeys. I still remember the first discussion I had with my manager. I was pleasantly surprised at how open and helpful the feedback session on my performance was, and I was even more surprised when my manager in turn asked me if I had any feedback to give on her performance!

We take honest discussions and genuine feedback seriously here at Ericsson, so, apart from our yearly IPAs, we get to take part in something we call our “Voice” surveys twice a year, which gives everyone at the company the chance to express their opinions on our shared direction as a company, how we’re feeling about our professional experiences and office life, how we feel about opportunities at the company, and much more. This offers the company a real chance to hear the voices of the people so that they can take adequate measures to address concerns, improve ways of working, and create a better people experience overall.

At home in our Ericsson family

Truthfully, I could go on and on about my experiences here at Ericsson and my feelings toward this company. But I think it sufficient to say that, for me, working here is like being home. A home is a place where you feel included, where your voice matters, where you are valued, and where you are given opportunities to learn and grow. Now add professional development and worthwhile career challenges, and you’ll have the complete package. That to me is Ericsson.
