There’s an Election Day routine in the lehighvalleylive.com newsroom that speaks to our commitment to local news.
Our journalists who vote in person instinctively take mental notes about what’s happening at their polling place. They call in those notes and that reporting shapes our coverage in the early hours of the day. We’ve been doing this for as long as I’ve been here, more than 20 years. We continue the routine because almost all of our journalists live in the Lehigh Valley, and observations of local polling places is part of how we cover elections.
If you’re a frequent lehighvalleylive.com reader and — hopefully — a subscriber, perhaps you have noticed we’re taking this election pretty seriously. In the past seven days alone, we have published more than two dozen election stories, almost all of which were written by our journalists … your neighbors.
We’ll publish dozens more this week, and it takes almost every resource we have to keep you informed in times like these.
As you make your way around lehighvalleylive.com, you’ll notice some content is marked Subscriber Exclusive, with a key next to the headline. After more than a decade of making all digital content available for free, we started a digital subscription program this April. For the equivalent of 27 cents per day, you can support the best team of working journalists in the Lehigh Valley and help us build a foundation that carries us forward.
You can activate that digital subscription today by clicking this link. Subscribing means being able to access 100% of our content and subscriber benefits — today, tomorrow and beyond.
Those of you who already have subscribed are playing an integral role in helping us better cover our region and we thank you for your support. No other project we have done this year better illustrates our growing commitment to excellence in local news coverage than Swing County, Swing State.
The collaborative project launched in September and delivered one of the most comprehensive reports ever produced on the vital role Northampton County plays in presidential elections. The county backed Barack Obama twice before flipping to Donald Trump in 2016. And its voters have backed almost every candidate who won the presidency in the last century.
It also was the most innovative digital journalism ever produced on lehighvalleylive.com and perhaps anywhere else in the region. Our work included interviewing more than 100 county voters, scouring handwritten voting records at the county archives, conducting scientific polling on local voter sentiment and producing a local voter forum streamed through Facebook Live.
If you haven’t seen what we’ve done with Swing County, Swing State, we’d encourage you to explore the project. This is the type of work we can produce with your support.
As for navigating lehighvalleylive.com this week, all coverage will appear on our homepage. Depending on your interests, we’d also suggest the following:
- Election coverage of Presidential, Congressional, state and local races will also be available at lehighvalleylive.com/elections.
- Our opinion content, op-ed pieces and Letters to the Editor may be found at lehighvalleylive.com/opinion.
- We also frequently will add fresh reporting to a LIVE UPDATES post that will be featured on our homepage. Look for election returns, reaction from candidates, polling place reports, blurbs about what’s happening outside the Lehigh Valley and more on this post.
When the election is over, we’ll still be here, working around the clock to keep you and your family safe and informed. We’ll continue our data-driven coverage of the coronavirus, our comprehensive high school sports analysis and our always-reliable breaking news reporting.
So thanks again for stopping by and spending time with our work. We appreciate your readership and feedback. If you have any questions, please reach out to me directly at this email address.
