TUCSON (KVOA)— This year has been hard on just about everyone, especially for our frontline workers. But thanks to a local company, a lucky nurse with Banner University Medical Center has one more thing to be thankful for this upcoming holiday.
Matthew Choate is getting his dream kitchen after he won a $25,000 contest from Southwest Kitchen.
The money will fund a new re-design, with new appliances, cabinets and a countertop. Choate has been part of the banner medical staff for four years and volunteers in units where nurses are needed.
When the pandemic hit, he worked in the COVID-19 unit where he contracted the virus. He was able to recover and quickly got back to work.
“It’s awesome to know that you feel supported by the community and it's so awesome that there's people out there that are helping us out and providing support to health care providers,” Choate said.
Medical staff at Banner were asked to submit a video entry and detail why they needed a new kitchen. Choate was selected out of 50 people who entered the contest.
Southwest Kitchen owners, Mel and Bob Elkins, said their business has flourished during the COVID-19 pandemic and they felt it was important to give back to the Tucson community.
Southwest Kitchen was joined by other Tucson local businesses who agreed to contribute to the dream kitchen makeover, including Conway Tile & Stone Specialists, Benjamin Supply, Arizona Wholesale, Showplace Cabinetry and Arizona Tile.
