BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Democrat Joe Biden has defeated President Donald Trump to become the 46th president of the United States.
A win in Pennsylvania sealed Biden’s victory after more than three tension-filled days of counting votes.
Trump refused to concede and threatened further legal action.
Leaders from our region reacted to the news.
In a tweet, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, said: “An historic and hugely meaningful moment for our good and great nation. We’re so proud of our friends and look forward to working together to make ours a more perfect Union.”
Sen. Bernie Sanders also reacted in a tweet, saying: “I want to congratulate all those who worked so hard to make this historic day possible. Now, through our continued grassroots organizing, let us create a government that works for ALL and not the few. Let us create a nation built on justice, not greed and bigotry.”
Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vermont, tweeted: “Congratulations President Biden! I am looking forward to working with you to deliver immediate COVID relief for Americans, roll back the harmful Trump policies and enact meaningful legislation for working Americans.”
Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York, also took Twitter. He said: “The long dark night in America is over, and a new dawn is coming.”
Schumer also added: “History. The first woman to be Vice President. The first African American to be Vice President. The first Asian American to be Vice President. I’m so proud of my friend Kamala Harris!”
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-New York, said in a tweet: “This country faces many big challenges, and I know that @JoeBiden will rise to meet them with decency and compassion, and do the necessary work to heal our nation. Congratulations on your victory, Joe! I look forward to working alongside you in the days and months ahead.”
In a statement, Gov. Phil Scott, R-Vermont, said:
"I want to congratulate President-elect Biden and Vice President-Elect Harris. I also want to recognize this historic moment as we see the first ever woman, and the first ever person of color, reach the U.S. vice presidency. It is my greatest hope they will be successful in uniting our country and leading us forward through these difficult times.
"And regardless of who we voted for, each of us must do all we can to heal our nation. We simply cannot go on with the level of division and polarization we’re seeing. It is preventing us from addressing our greatest challenges and strengthening adversaries who want to dim the bright light of liberty and economic opportunity that America represents in the world.
"We are counting on President-Elect Biden to deliver the principled, unifying leadership he committed to on the campaign trail. We are counting on the Congress to find a better, less partisan and more American path forward. And we are counting on President Trump and his administration to honor the will of the people, respect our democratic process and commit to the peaceful transfer of power that is the very foundation of our republic.
"For over 200 years our electoral process has stood as the example to the free world, providing hope for people and places where free elections are not guaranteed. We cannot let our system fall victim to those who fail to live up to its values. I want to be clear about this: Both Republican and Democrat election officials in every state in the country stand by the integrity of this process. Only legal votes are being counted.
"The voters have spoken. It is now up to each of us to rise above the anger and divisiveness and to turn our focus to our common humanity and love of family, freedom and country. This is what real leadership would call on us to do – win or lose.
"We can start by treating those with whom we disagree on public policy or politics with dignity and respect, knowing vigorous debate can still be civil. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, D-New York, also sent out a statement:
“This is a historic day. After the darkness, division and hate of the past four years, America has spoken and rejected more of the same. Congratulations to my good friend President-Elect Joe Biden and to Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris. Today we go forward in hope and progress.”
