Hosts statewide earned nearly $1.7 million from welcoming guests living within 300 miles of their destination in June, rural areas continue to be top trending destinations

Vermont Business Magazine As summer continues, families across Vermont are looking to their own backyards to safely get outdoors, taking to the road to see and stay in new nearby destinations that they may not have otherwise thought to discover. Along with providing a responsible way to enjoy a change of scenery, these local trips are ensuring that even more Vermont communities can benefit from tourism.

Trending Destinations for Local Travel Across Vermont

In Vermont alone, Airbnb hosts statewide earned nearly $1.7 million from welcoming guests living within 300 miles during the month of June, and in many destinations, hosts have earned more welcoming local guests than they did in June 2019. The top trending destinations for local travel in Vermont -- with percentage increases in host income from nearby guests -- include: Killington (68%), Stratton (52%) and Stowe (32%).

This increase in Vermont host income from local travel is in addition to encouraging signs on the Airbnb platform in regard to host income in rural areas. Hosts in rural areas of the US earned over $200 million in the month of June, an increase of more than 25 percent over what hosts in these areas earned in June 2019.

With hosts on Airbnb keeping the vast majority of what they charge, this income is critical for many Vermont hosts and their families -- it is a reason why even during the current pandemic, nine in 10 hosts surveyed tell us they plan to host the same amount or even more often once they're able to welcome guests again. Any resident of these destinations looking to tap into the local travel trend by sharing their home can learn more at airbnb.com/host.

Top Wishlisted Listings

Families across Vermont will continue to look to these nearby destinations for local road trips as we head into August. Given this, Airbnb is sharing some of its top wishlisted listings in these trending regions, to inspire your next local trip:

Traveling Safely and Responsibly

With guests looking to travel safely, Airbnb listings are meeting guests’ new, emerging needs for increased cleanliness and privacy. Ninety-four percent of all Airbnb reviews show that guests are satisfied with cleaning, scoring it at four or five stars after their stays. In addition, roughly three out of four guests recently surveyed by Airbnb said they would be more comfortable staying with their families in a listing than in a hotel with other people -- as listings provide amenities like private kitchens and laundry, along with offering guests more control over their environment and travel experience.

Airbnb encourages hosts and guests to travel responsibly and review the guidance and health advisories issued by relevant governmental and health authorities in advance of any booking or trip.

Airbnb is also reminding hosts, travelers and policymakers of its new industry-leading Enhanced Cleaning Protocol, to support the safe reopening of travel. This includes a step-by-step cleaning handbook -- with guidelines informed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) -- to help hosts elevate their cleaning practices and prepare their home for guests. In addition, guests looking to book their trip can easily identify and book listings, thanks to a new highlight on listings that opt-in to this Protocol.
