Updating Community Groups and Support Groups listings

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 Shelter-In-Place restrictions, we are in the process of updating our Community Groups and Support Groups listings. If you’d like to be included in the updated listings, please send your contact information to events@advocate-news.com, or 690 S. Main St., Fort Bragg CA 95437. Your contact information should include: Name of group, address, phone number, and email address.

Stop that scratching

On Friday, Aug. 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., volunteers will be at the Fort Bragg Food Bank (910 N. Franklin St.) providing free Frontline+ flea/tick preventive for the dogs of low-income folks. Flea/tick shampoo, dog treats, leashes, collars, harnesses, sweaters, blankets, beds, and ID tags and information about free puppy shots and spay/neuter will be available. This is a project of Second Chance, Helping the Pets of People in Need. Redwood Coast Regional Center Board meets

The Redwood Coast Developmental Services Corporation (RCDSC) announces that the next Board of Directors’ meeting will take place by Zoom Video/Teleconferencing and AT&T Teleconferencing on Wednesday, Aug. 12. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m.

RCDSC is the governing board of directors for the Redwood Coast Regional Center, a non-profit organization providing essential services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their families in four counties, including Mendocino County. Medicare Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program

August date appointments for The Medicare Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) are available on Aug. 13 and 27. HICAP will provide free and unbiased counseling, education and advocacy to all Medicare beneficiaries via a phone counseling session. Call 1-800-434-0222 (Senior Advocacy Services) to set up an appointment.

Kindergarten registration

Mendocino K8 School’s kindergarten registration is now open. A child is eligible for transitional kindergarten if their fifth birthday falls between Sept. 2 and Dec. 2. A child must turn five by Sept. 1 to be eligible for kindergarten. Please come by the Mendocino K8 School office (Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) or call 707-937-0515 to begin the registration process.

Summer Kids Bag Program

The Fort Bragg Food Bank’s summer kids bag program runs through the summer on Tuesdays from noon to 3 p.m. The Food Bank will give families with children an extra bag of food every week. Pull up to the curbside. Put on your mask and open your trunk. Wait for their volunteers to load your food. And drive away with extra food. Partners in this program are the Mendocino Coast Children’s Fund, James G. Cummings Foundation and the Fort Bragg Unified School District. Friends of the Gardens Birdhouse Auction

The Friends of the Gardens (FOG) annual Birdhouse Auction is happening now through Sept. 30. This year the silent auction has been moved online where you can still enjoy a bidding war or purchase your favorite for the “buy-it-now” price. Proceeds from this FOG fundraiser benefit the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. Click here to view the online auction. 2020 Census Response deadline extended

The 2020 Census Response deadline has been extended to Oct. 31, 2020. There are 3 ways to respond:

1. Computer: my2020census.gov. You can respond with or without an invitation number.

2. Telephone: English 1-844-330-2020 Spanish 1-844-468-2020. 4 am – 11pm PST

3. Paper forms mailed late April.
