We are facing a potential eviction cliff. The governor’s executive order allows local jurisdictions to create eviction moratoriums until Sept. 30. Many local governments did just that, until the California Judicial Council put in place their own ban on COVID-19-related evictions. In response, all of our local jurisdictions besides the cities of Santa Cruz and Capitola have allowed their eviction moratoriums to expire.
Now, the Judicial Council is set to have a vote Aug. 14 that could end the moratorium, and with most local jurisdictions not having measures in place, we could see a flood of evictions being filed and processed. Want to depend on the State Legislature? They’re working as fast as they can, but the two major bills are in committee hearings Aug. 12 and the Aug. 18. It could be weeks before the State has something in place.
Local governments must act to prevent mass evictions and homelessness.

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 150 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes.
