SUPERIOR, WI . (KBJR) - At the Richard I. Bong Memorial Airport in Superior, a local aviator received a special award from the Federal Aviation Administration Saturday.

Tom Sullivan was given the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award.

It’s awarded to pilots with 50 or more years of civil and military piloting experience, or 50 or more years combined experience in both piloting and aircraft operations, with flights that have been accident and violation free.

Sullivan was surrounded by family members, friends and fellow pilots for the ceremony.

According to Sullivan, throughout his 50 years of flying, he’s been committed to operating a plane safely and encourages other pilots to do so.

“I’ve always lived by the saying ‘better to be the ground wishing you were in the air than in the air wishing you were on the ground,’ that stands all the way through aviation,” said Sullivan.

The award gets its name from Orville and Wilbur Wright, the two American aviation pioneers credited with inventing, building, and flying the world’s the first successful motor-operated airplane.

The awards ceremony was part of a second annual Open House at the Richard I Bong Memorial Airport in Superior.

The day-long event was organized by members of the Commemorative Air Force’s Lake Superior Squadron and other local organizations.
