The air was cold — temperatures hit a high of about 25 degrees — but hearts were warmed in Montclair on Valentine’s Day.

Photographer Kate Albright set out to explore all kinds of love — for partners, for families, for friends and for community. Here are some of the stories she encountered.

Volunteer Jack Farrell carries a box of carnations to give to the seniors visiting the Do Drop In senior activity program at the Wally Choice Community Center in Glenfield Park. Sisters Daisy and Myla Koontz shop for gifts for their mom at CVS on Claremont Avenue on Valentine’s Day — which dad Dylan said was also their mom’s birthday. They bought chocolates, balloons, a stuffed animal, pens and pencils. The girls like to include small things like pens because their mother likes to write, Dylan Koontz said. Alejandro Gonzalez and Ashley Garcia, who have been dating for four years, came from Clifton to eat at Ani Ramen on Valentine’s Day. Here, they’re headed to Mochinut for dessert. (KATE ALBRIGHT / FOR MONTCLAIR LOCAL)
Juan Blanco huddles his wife, Ruth Serafini, in the cold on Valentine’s Day as they walk back to their car after eating dinner at Sweet Kitchen. The two have been together since 2017 and were married in 2019, they said. (KATE ALBRIGHT / FOR MONTCLAIR LOCAL)
In the early afternoon on Valentine’s Day, Terieza Ndewere prepares for an after-school visit from her granddaughter, who is 12 years old. Over the weekend, Ndewere cleaned her house and on Valentine’s Day, she walked in frigid temperatures from the bus stop with balloons she purchased at Jonathan’s Balloons in Upper Montclair. She is proud of her “self-governing” granddaughter and sees a bit of herself in her, she said. While her own three children know her to be frugal, her granddaughter thinks she is rich, she said. The secret is to always set aside money for her grandchildren when she is purchasing her weekly groceries, she said. (KATE ALBRIGHT / FOR MONTCLAIR LOCAL)
Izone Bell, 92, right, said she enjoys coming to the Do Drop In with her best friend, Margaret Stewart, 87. They met more than 40 years ago at St Mark’s United Methodist Church, the pair said. Over the years, they have traveled together and taken care of each other’s great grandchildren, and now enjoy being at the senior center together. (KATE ALBRIGHT / FOR MONTCLAIR LOCAL)
