For the first time since the Coronavirus pandemic shut down high school sports in New York State at the end of the 2020 winter season, Section II will conduct postseason playoffs and crown champions in each of its five classes.

The baseball and softball postseason begin on Monday and continues on Tuesday with a full slate of games.

Because the spring season was condensed into six weeks, Section II decided to open up the playoffs to all teams, regardless of their won-loss record. In another twist, the higher seeded team in each matchup will host throughout the tournament.

Locally, four Columbia County schools have been named the No. 1 seed in their class. Hudson (Class B) and Germantown (Class D) are top seeds in the baseball playoffs, while Ichabod Crane (Class B) and Chatham (Class C) are top seeds in softball.

In Class B, Patroon Conference champion Hudson will have the homefield advantage throughout, starting with Tuesday’s 4 p.m. first round game against Monday’s Cobleskill-Watervliet winner. If the Bluehawks win there, they would host the winner of the Granville-Fonda game on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Ichabod Crane is the No. 5 seed in Class B and will host No. 12 seed Catskill, while Taconic Hills is the No. 13 seed and will travel to No. 4 Tamarac on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The two winners will meet in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Greenville, which is playing its best baseball of the season after a slow start, is the No. 7 seed in Class B and will host No. 10 Cohoes on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The winner moves on to play in the quarterfinals on Thursday against either No. 2 Broadalbin-Perth, No. 15 Coxsackie-Athens or No. 18 Ravena.

Semifinal round games in Class B will be played on Saturday, with the championship game scheduled for Tuesday, June 15.

In Class C, Chatham is the No. 5 seed and will host No. 12 Duanesburg or No. 21 Bishop Gibbons on Tuesday at 4 p.m., with the winner moving on to Thursday’s 4 p.m. quarterfinal game against either No. 4 Greenwich, No. 13 Hoosick Falls or No. 20 Voorheesville.

Maple Hill is the No. 11 seed in Class C and hosts No. 22 Berlin/New Lebanon on Monday.

In Class D, Germantown earned the No. 1 seed in a six-team field and will host a semifinal round game on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Clippers will play the winner of Thursday’s game between No. 4 Salem and No. 5 Hartford/Ft. Edward.

The Class D championship game will be played on Tuesday, June 15 at 4 p.m.

Ichabod Crane finished 14-0 in the regular season, outscoring its opponents, 194-9, to earn the No. 1 seed in the Section II Class B playoffs.

Greenville is the No. 2 seed in Class B and will open play on Tuesday by hosting the winner of Monday’s Cohoes vs. Broadalbin-Perth game. A Spartans win on Tuesday would put them in the quarterfinals against either Granville or Schuylerville on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Taconic Hills earned the No. 5 seed in Class B and will host Mechanicville on Tuesday at 4 p.m., with the winner advancing to Thursday’s 4 p.m. quarterfinal game to play the winner of Tuesday’s No. 13 Hudson at No. 4 Schalmont game.
