ST. CLAIRSVILLE — “Going Baroque in the Valley,” a new musical program that will benefit local musicians and church repairs, is set for later this month at the First Presbyterian Church in ST. Clairsville.
Millard Neal, musical director for the church and event organizer, said he has been planning the charitable program since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the idea came to him after speaking with local musicians and audio technicians who were losing job opportunities and money due to the lack of entertainment being conducted in the region. He said he thought to himself that musicians in the valley are going to go broke because of this, which is how he came up with the program’s title.
“I thought that I could get something together that would at least be a small contribution to help these guys continue with the work they do, so I got the idea of a varied program,” he said.
Neal said he opted to postpone the event until the pandemic had subsided and people could feel more comfortable with gathering.
“Things are moving along really nicely now — we’re really looking forward to it,” he added.
For people who may still have reservations about attending indoor events, Neal said they will be able to listen from the comfort of their vehicle in the church parking lot, where FM radios will be stationed to relay the concert.
The show will feature a variety of musical entertainment including a three-piece vocal group, The Ron Ritzer Trio; a Vivaldi concerto for two violins and cello by the Collaborative Connection Keyboard Orchestra; Bob Ventre, who will play classical music on the mandolin; Robert Irvin and the Wheeling Jazz Grads; and more. Neal said the performances will be unique and entertaining.
All of the proceeds collected through ticket sales will benefit the show’s performers, Neal said.
“It’s kind of like a stimulus check that they have to work for,” he joked. “We want to encourage them. People miss live music, we can’t go without it.”
Any remaining funds collected from the show will go toward the church to aid in repairing its stained glass windows, he added. The project is estimated to cost tens of thousands of dollars, he said.
Neal said he is an optimist who is expecting the event to pack the house. He added that the church, where the program will be held, can hold around 350 people.
“It’s going to be approximately an hour long, fast moving, high energy and quality entertainment,” he said of the event.
The program is organized and directed by the Sound Knowledge Music Studio in partnership with C.A. House. “Going Baroque in the Valley” will take place at 6:30 p.m. June 27 at the First Presbyterian Church, located at 110 S. Marietta St., St. Clairsville.
