Elections update: 8:30 p.m.

With 19,099 mail-in absentee ballots and in person early votes — accounting for 63.4% of all registered voters in Dare County — now reported, Republicans are leading in a number of local races, by varying margins.

In the race for District 2 Dare County Commissioner, incumbent Republican Bob Woodard is leading Democratic challenger Amanda Hooper Walters by 57%-43%. In the District 3 contest, incumbent Republican Steve House is leading Democratic challenger Kathy McCullough-Testa by 56%-44%.

In the three contested battles for the Dare County Board of Education, incumbent Republican David Twiddy is leading Democratic challenger Charles Parker 58%-42%. In the at-large contest. And in the District 1 race, Republican challenger Carl Woody II is leading Democratic incumbent Bea Basnight by a narrow margin, 51%-49%. Finally, in the District 2 battle for an open seat, Republican Susan Bothwell leads Democrat Jen Alexander 52% to 48%.

In the battle for the District 1 seat in the NC Senate, Republican incumbent Bob Steinburg is leading Democratic challenger Tess Judge in the 11-county district 52-48%. And in the race for the District 6 seat in the NC House, incumbent Republican Bobby Hanig has a large 64%-36% lead over Democrat Tommy Fulcher in the four-county district.
