SULPHUR SPRINGS— What started out as a fundraiser for a local volunteer fire department, turned into something more for Colonel Crawford’s elementary school.

During the first full week in October, the students of Hannah Crawford Elementary school participated in a “penny war” fundraiser for “fire prevention week” where the proceeds collected went to this year’s chosen fire department, Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department.

Carrie Betts, Colonel Crawford’s PTO president, said that this is the school’s second annual penny war.

For the penny war, there were containers placed in the cafeteria for each grade level, and students were to bring in spare change. The rules of the penny war were that pennies and dollar bills were positive points, but silver change was negative points. Pennies were one point, one dollar was one hundred points, a five-dollar bill was five hundred points, a ten-dollar bill was one thousand points, a twenty-dollar bill was two thousand points. For the silver change, nickels would subtract five points, dimes would subtract ten, and quarters would subtract twenty-five. Students could put the silver change in other grade level’s bins to bring their point total down.

“One night we made pennies, dollars, and quarters positive and others negative. It was a fun way to have a little competition among the kids,” Betts said.

The kindergarten class ended up winning, and they received an ice cream treat party as their prize. The final amount raised by the elementary students was $1560.

“We normally donate to Jefferson township because they do our fire week, but I felt that other departments assist CC families, so I chose Liberty township this year,” Betts said.

Liberty township was informed that they were receiving the donation, but in the time leading up to them receiving it, they learned that Mrs. Voss, the elementary principal, was trying to get a new online reading program for the students.

“The donation to the fire department means a great deal, like any rural fire department, we work on a very limited budget and things like that help out immensely,” Liberty’s fire chief, Rick Harley said. “We thought that people have been good to us over the years, so when we get to give back, we do it and we thought that helping Mrs. Voss get the reading program for the students was perfect.”

The department ended up donating $2000 to Mrs. Voss to help.

“I was completely surprised, and I was not expecting it. I am always blown away by the generosity of this community. I went in there expecting to give to them, but they, in turn, gave back to us. It was totally just unexpected. It is a much-needed program, so this came at a really great time and it’s definitely a win-win for our little eagles,” Mrs. Voss said.

The reading program the school is purchasing is called Lexia Core5, and it is an online supplemental reading program that will be accessible to all students in grades PreK-5. It will be accessible in school and from home so if the school does have to go to online learning, it will be something students have access to at home so they can continue individualized learning.

Every student will pre-assess using the program and then it will create a personalized learning path for them based on what their individual learning needs are, and then it will help take them to that next level. The teachers can monitor it all, and it’ll provide a prescriptive path for the students and the teachers can provide intervention along the way based on what those needs are. The program is not replacing anything in the school, but rather supplementing what is there.

“We were taken by surprise by their generosity. CC families and the community truly do support their kids,” Betts said.
