JACKSON, MI -- With airplanes right out the window and a new patio, The Apron Restaurant and Spirits has one of the best views in Jackson.
Anthony Riddle took over as owner of the restaurant at the Jackson County Airport in November 2019. He has already made many changes.
Starting with the menu, Riddle has moved to sourcing ingredients with more fresh and local options. At the bar, he has added 16 beers on draft and has 11 signature cocktails. The restaurant is known for its breakfasts, Riddle said. Popular dishes include omelets, breakfast tacos or steak and potato hash.
For lunch and dinner, Riddle has moved to more sandwiches and burgers, but also offers chicken and fish tacos. The breading and salsa for the tacos are made in house.
With the changes, Riddle is now seeing a new clientele.
“It’s great to start seeing younger customers,” he said.
New owner, new plans for Jackson Airport restaurant
A new 3,800 square-foot patio offers outdoor seating right along the airport tarmac fence.
“You can sit outside while you enjoy your drinks and food,” Riddle said. “No one in town has a view like us.”
The restaurant did its first live entertainment last week and plans more, Riddle said. Future plans also include possibly adding an outdoor pavilion and wood-fired pizza oven to the outdoor patio. Riddle is also eyeing doing plane and car shows with live entertainment and food trucks.
“There is so much potential out here,” he said.
While the novel coronavirus pandemic forced the restaurant to close for three months, Riddle is happy to be back open at 50 percent capacity and is encouraged by the response.
“We are doing more business now than before,” Riddle said. “It just speaks to Jackson. They want to get out and support local business.”
The Apron Restaurant and Spirits is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. It is closed Mondays. Call 517-783-3616. More info can be found at https://www.theapron517.com/
