GALION—Second Harvest will be distributing food to Crawford County residents on Sept. 23.
According to Local Second Harvest Coordinator Virginia Hammontree, this will be the seventh visit from the organization to distribute food in Crawford County since April 13.
“Second Harvest has been a wonderful help to the people in Crawford County since the first Bucyrus Distribution on April 13. Second Harvest knew there was a need, they saw the orders being placed by local soup kitchens, food pantries, backpack programs, and from the reports we have to file, could easily see the increases in these services,” said Hammontree.
She said that Second Harvest, their suppliers, and the Ohio National Guard, along with the local schools and some businesses providing meals or treats, all stepped up to continue to help the communities.
Hammontree said that during the four visits from Second Harvest to Bucyrus, approximately 2,200 families received much-needed assistance.
“We are currently working out the details for a final October visit to Bucyrus. What I do know about October is the National Guard will not be available to help. We will need about 25 volunteers to replace the guards to make this visit happen. Please message the Bucyrus Backpack Program Facebook page if you or your organization might be available to help,” said Hammontree.
The food distribution will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 23 at Galion Middle School, 474 Portland Way North, in Galion. Free boxes of shelf-stable food and more will be placed only in the trucks of each vehicle and people should ensure that their trunks are cleaned out to allow room for the food boxes. Everyone is to remain inside their vehicle during the drive-thru mobile pantry.
