N.J. Motor Vehicle Commission hit with statewide network outage, unable to process transactions - NJ.com

State Motor Vehicle Commission agencies were unable to process transactions after a network connection problem knocked computer systems offline statewide.

Drivers reported the problem which was followed by an official MVC announcement on the commission’s website and on social media. The outage was first reported around 9 a.m., said William Connolly, an MVC spokesman.

The network problem is the first major computer issue to hit the MVC since agencies reopened on July 7 to a tidal wave of drivers lining up in the early morning and waiting for hours to conduct business. Agencies had been closed for four months since Mid-March to reduce spread of the coronavirus.

Agencies have been processing as many as 285,000 transactions a week, MVC officials said. They have tried to ease the lines by moving more transactions to the website. But most of the people interviewed on line at agencies said they had business that can only be done in person.

Reaction on social media was swift and angry from drivers, who were on line Monday morning.

In addition, a power problem forced the Edison MVC agency to shut down, according to the MVC.
