AUBURN, Ala. (EETV) - The Auburn City Council voted 6-3 on Tuesday night to extend the state of local emergency through Oct. 7.
The state of emergency was first adopted during a special meeting on Aug. 27. The resolution established that bars and restaurants in Auburn would only be allowed to sell alcohol to seated customers.
Councilman Jay Hovey voted against the extension. Hovey cited off-campus gatherings as one of his reasons. “In some very informal conversations with public safety, they’re still seeing students congregate,” he said.
The council however voted to allow bars to serve walk-up customers for the first home football game on Sept. 26 and Oct. 3, when the Tigers travel to face Georgia.
Mayor Ron Anders said officials will monitor downtown on those dates, then decide whether to continue with the relaxed restrictions.
