Indiana Sired Fair Circuit harness racing had its consolations and championships Thursday at the state fairgrounds in Indianapolis. The clay surface mile track at the fairgrounds has been the scene of some of the most fabled races and time trials in harness racing history during its 100-plus years of racing.

The top 16 horses were determined by point standings in each of the eight divisions, 2-year-olds and 3-year-olds, trotters and pacers, colts and fillies. The top eight horses raced for the Governor’s Cup and a purse in each division of $20,000, and the remaining eight raced in the consolation bracket for a purse in each division of $8,000. Local horses were represented.

In the championship race for 2-year-old pacing colts, Ultimaroca from the Conrad stable was fourth.

In the consolation races, the Conrad stable had four horses that qualified. Two-year-old pacer Jack Wacker was fifth in his race. Two-year-old trotting colt Boom Pow was fourth. Conrad’s 3-year-old pacing colt Bludhaven was fourth in his race, and the 3-year-old trotting colt Mt. Swanmore was second. The 3-year-old pacing filly Hayswood Pacifica, owned by Hayswood Farm of Corydon, was third in her consolation race, posting a career best time of 1:55:1 over the historic mile oval.

Elsewhere last week, the freshman filly pacer Brandon’s Rose, born and raised on the Alvin Walther farm south of Lanesville, was third in her race at Hawthorne Racecourse in Chicago. The older pacing gelding To the Limit, a brother to “Rose,” as both are offspring of Walther’s great mare Hoosier Vacation, was sixth in his race at Running Aces race track in Minneapolis.

At Hoosier Park in Anderson, Conrad’s older pacing stallion Uncaged was eighth in his race.

Racing continues at pari-mutuel tracks, and some of the county fair horses with local connections are expected to race at Hoosier Park in Anderson the rest of the season.
