West Virginia State Police have charged a Berkeley Springs woman with embezzlement following an investigation into the finances of a local youth wrestling club.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Morgan County Magistrate Court, Jamie Bowers, 34, was charged on July 29 by Cpl. V.E. Branham of the West Virginia State Police.
At the end of May, Cpl. Branham responded to a complaint of financial irregularities from a member of the Berkeley Springs Junior Wrestling Club, of which Bowers was treasurer.
Police were provided bank records showing purchases and ATM withdrawals that the group said Bowers had not provided proper documentation for. The complainant alleged those purchases and withdrawals added up to more than $16,000.
Bowers had been the group’s treasurer from January 2016 to May 2020, court records said.
On June 22, Cpl. Branham met with the Bowers and her attorney. According to police, Bowers said she had deposit records showing that she had placed some of the money back in the club’s account.
In his complaint, Cpl. Branham said he gave Bowers “ample time to provide those documents but never received them.”
Bowers in free on a $2,500 personal recognizance bond and was scheduled to appear in Morgan County Magistrate Court yesterday, August 18.
