Local 463 a popular evening dining destination in Mississippi, but lunch a treat, too - Jackson Clarion Ledger

soworos.blogspot.com

In the constant revolving door of new restaurants that have come and gone, Local 463 Urban Kitchen in Ridgeland has maintained a strong presence in the metro area restaurant scene for several years, first in Madison and since 2016, in its current location in Ridgeland’s Renaissance at Highland Colony.

The address may have changed, but the eatery operated by well-known Jackson restaurateur Derek Emerson and his wife, Jennifer, has remained a source of creative, excellently prepared food utilizing Mississippi products like fresh seafood and locally grown produce.

Local 463 is a popular evening dining destination, but since lunch is the meal I’ve most often enjoyed at both locations, I’ll focus on this menu. There’s something about this modern yet friendly place filled with the aroma of comfort food like fried chicken and meatloaf accompanied by fresh vegetables and cornbread emanating from the kitchen that continually lures me for lunch.

Blue-plate lunches

Depending on your preference, a delicious home-style meal can be yours any day of the week. An overflowing plate of your favorite meat, vegetables, comeback salad, cornbread and tea makes an average Monday much more bearable. More often than not when visiting Local 463, a blue plate is my go-to selection.

For $12, sample red beans and rice or beef tips and rice on Monday, fried chicken or meatloaf on Tuesday, smoked beef brisket or smothered pork chop on Wednesday, hamburger steak or herb-baked chicken on Thursday or fried catfish or red beans and rice on Friday.

If a vegetable plate ($11) is more to your liking, pick four of your favorites from among butter beans, green beans, carrots, creamed corn and fried okra, to name a few. Paired with comeback salad and cornbread, it’s a more than satisfying meal. Even better, as mentioned, Mississippi-grown vegetables are utilized for the freshest, farm-to-table experience.

Local 463 is known for its healthy take on comfort foods, but numerous dishes reflect the health-conscious lifestyles of millennials as well as older customers.

Appetizers

The restaurant's appetizers could almost and in some cases probably do serve as meal. Creative starters include crispy Kung Pao rock shrimp ($12) tossed in a housemade Asian barbecue sauce, tamales ($11) served with a sweet corn sauce, pico de gallo and chipotle-lime sour cream, Portobello fries ($10) with spicy horseradish comeback sauce, breadless jumbo lump crab cake and fried green tomato Napoleon ($12) with crawfish tails.

Crispy flat breads topped with Florida rock shrimp and fried green tomato ($14), spicy Thai ingredients ($14), Greek favorites ($11) and mushroom and truffle ($14) are a delicious alternative to a heavier lunch.

Burgers and salads

If you’re looking for a lighter meal, try one of several hearty salads on the menu. A sample of salad offerings includes tart apple and arugula ($12), house chef ($14), grilled salmon and kale ($17), Cobb ($14) and fried Florida rock shrimp. Each salad can be enhanced with a variety of meat, seafood and housemade dressing offerings.

Favorite selections include the super Kobe burger ($16), Burger 463 ($16), chorizo burger ($15/$19), shrimp po’boy ($16), pork belly Cuban ($12), grilled chicken and fried green tomato BLT ($14) and grilled redfish sandwich ($16), each one filled with creative ingredients and sauces.

Seafood, chicken and pork plates

A collection of creative and artfully prepared “big plates” or lunch entrees featuring chicken, seafood and pork are on the menu.

A sample includes apricot-teriyaki-glazed grilled salmon ($18/$28), redfish 463 ($20/$32), blackened chicken penne ($17/$20), original honey-rosemary fried chicken ($15/$20) with vegetables, Dr.  Pepper-braised beef short ribs ($26) with vegetables and chicken enchilada ($14).

Each entrée is paired with original sauces and other accompaniments that create a memorable meal.
