FAIRMONT — For the first time even, Kinship of Martin County is putting on a fall raffle. The raffle features prizes from a variety of local businesses and will serve as a fundraiser for the program.

Director Jen Kahler shared what sparked the idea.

“I had reached out to Elizabeth at the Cup N’ Saucer to see if they had ever done any kind of fundraiser dinner. She told me they hadn’t but mentioned that the Welcome Fire Department had done a raffle where the grand prize was a tasting menu,” Kahler said.

She thought that was a good idea and worked with the Cup N’ Saucer to get it set up for them as well. Kahler said once that was secured, she began reaching out to others in the community to start filling out the rest of the prizes.

Kahler said the goal was to have it be as local as possible, while including some smaller businesses, too.

The grand prize is a tasting menu for 10 at Cup N’ Saucer, valued at $960. Other prizes include a poolside pizza party at Holiday Inn, detailing services at Hawkins Chevrolet, gift basket from Loxley Coffee and a 10-day punch pass from Live Fit.

“So much of Kinship is funded by individual donors or business donors or grants. We’ve been very fortunate to have a lot of repeat donors and have received some grants more than once,” Kahler said.

She said they’re also aware that the only secure source of funding they have comes from the county, which covers a third to a fourth of their overall budget.

“We’re always looking for ways to do new fundraisers to make sure we have all of our bases covered,” Kahler said.

Kinship is still holding its annual fall mailer, a fundraising campaign, which kicks off around Thanksgiving. Kahler said they send out letters to their list of donors and aim to make it as personal as possible. They’re always looking to add names to the list.

Kahler admitted that the response to the raffle has been a bit overwhelming, though very positive.

“It was incredible, the reach that we got off of the initial (Facebook) post. I don’t think we were prepared for how much exposure it would potentially get us.”

Raffle tickets are available at the Cup N’ Saucer. Kahler said they’re not available in the community right now, but she’s happy to meet people or drop them off.

Kahler can be reached at 507-320-9377 or by email at kinship@martincounty.com.

Raffle tickets are $10 each. Kahler said around 150 tickets have been sold and they have 500 available. The drawing will take place on Halloween and winners will be reached via phone or email.

“We’re hoping to do this again in the future, especially once we’ve got the process down,” Kahler said.
