Local makers have found a new way to promote Humboldt County businesses for residents and tourists alike: the Passport to Humboldt.

The Stuudiio, a local full-service design and marketing agency, worked with more than 20 local businesses to curate the Passport to Humboldt. In essence, the “passport” acts as a pocketbook tour guide full of discounts for local restaurants, bars, cafés and dispensaries throughout the county

“The Passport to Humboldt has been a long-harbored idea for me,” said Stuudiio director Raelina Krikston. “A friend of mine ran a passport program in Denver where I’m originally from and I had always wondered why there wasn’t something similar in Humboldt. It’s a great way to discover a new place.”

Some of the local businesses featured in the Passport to Humboldt include the Humboldt Patient Resource Center, Oberon Grill, Chuchi’s Old Town Eats, North of Fourth, Dick Taylor Chocolate and Humboldt Bay Provisions.

“There are some great specials in there — you’ll want to bring a friend along with you. It’s a great accompaniment to date nights and visiting family members or just rediscovering your new favorite places in town,” she said. “I had been sitting on this idea to recreate the project here for a few years but after the pandemic, I felt that the timing was right to launch it. I wanted to concentrate on the hardest-hit businesses and also businesses that offer a unique Humboldt experience. Humboldt is a really special place and more often than not, the most interesting places are off the beaten path.”

After more than a year of struggling under the COVID-19 pandemic, Nicholas Kohl, owner of Oberon Grill in Eureka, said Passport to Humboldt will encourage people to get out of their homes and explore something new.

“At this point, I’m in a position where I am confident my business (is) moving forward. I’m really interested in supporting people in the community and supporting businesses like Raelina’s that are starting up and have new ideas about things to try,” he said. “A big deal about how we’re going to grow as a community is wayfinding for tourists and asking ourselves how we get travelers to see the elements that we want them to see. This is just another one of those small steps to help do that where we can really curate businesses and experiences that we feel reflect the area in a genuine way.”

Humboldt Patient Resource Center director Mariellen Jurkovich said the passport will be a great way to support local businesses.

“Our community has been very supportive. I feel that the booklet will be a great way to introduce customers to businesses (whether ours or others) to something they have not known about or have tried,” she said. “When my children were younger, there were always coupon books that we could buy to support an activity they were in. I love supporting local businesses and this always was a good way to try places we had not tried before and support places we had.”

When we spend locally, we all succeed, Krikston said.

“I would really like this project to help bolster that as we move forward. I don’t know if there’s a real return to normal, and honestly, in a lot of ways I do hope we are forever changed by the experiences of the past year, for the better,” she said. “The last thing I want is to see businesses fail only to be swooped up by out of towners and then turned into some hip chain concept that prices locals out. We have a really good thing going on here, but we still have to support one another as changes move into the area.”

Passports will become available in the coming weeks at Just My Type Letterpress and The Peg House and will be valid through September. Pre-order is available at humboldtpassport.com.

“Participating businesses will also have a select few available so ask your favorite spots if they’re carrying them,” she added. “We will have some specials for the intrepid few who complete their passports, so stay tuned.”
