Only 54% of Montclair is vaccinated? That's misleading (Letter) - Montclair Local

When I saw the headline “54% of Montclair vaccinated” in Montclair Local, I was surprised that there appeared to be so much vaccine hesitancy in my town (which I have always thought of as both more progressive and intelligent than average).

It wasn’t until the ninth paragraph that it was stated, “70% of those over 18 were fully vaccinated, and 94% of those ages 65 and up.” I believe the headline should have stated the percentage of eligible people vaccinated, or if the writer didn’t know that number it could have stated, “over 70% of those over 18 are vaccinated.”

Besides 54% being highly misleading, I also believe sloppy numbers like this are confusing and help lead those who are hesitant to believe, if so many others are not also not getting it, they too are justified in not believing in the safety of the vaccine.
