On November 25th at The Yard in Annapolis, Md., George Washington men's basketball and Navy will join for the seventh edition of the Veterans Classic. The game will air live on CBS Sports Network at noon and serve as the first game of the entire college hoops season nationwide.
"Having our young men participate in a college basketball tradition on national television is a dream way to start a season that has been a long time coming," said GW Head Coach Jamion Christian. "Our group has come so far since last March in our connectivity with one another, and we're excited to show the country what GW Basketball is all about at an outstanding event like the Veterans Classic."
The contest marks the first meeting between the programs in a decade and resumes a historic rivalry that dates back to the early 1900s. The Buff and Blue holds a narrow edge, 21-20, in the all-time series between the two proud programs.
GW returns four student-athletes who started 18+ games a season ago, led by the sharp-shooting duo of Jamison Battle and Maceo Jack who finished 1-2 in 3-point field goals made in the A-10 last season. Jameer Nelson Jr. and Chase Paar also logged starters minutes as first-years in 2019-20, and the roster is bolstered this season with a bevy of newcomers who bring major experience. Power conference transfers Matt Moyer (Vanderbilt via Syracuse) and James Bishop (LSU) figure to play key roles for GW, while Siena-transfer Sloan Seymour is now eligible and will form a deep-shooting troika with Battle and Jack after he buried 94 3s in his rookie season in Albany before transferring to Foggy Bottom last season.
Navy also returns all but one starter and like its guests from DC is looking to take a major leap up in its conference landscape this season.
GW joins a tradition at Navy that has featured five nationally-ranked programs in Veterans Classic history, eight teams that would go on to compete in the NCAA Tournament later that season, and 18 student-athletes who would go on to play in the NBA.
If Navy is able to host fans at the Classic, details will be announced at a later date. The remainder of GW's 2020-21 schedule, including non-conference and Atlantic 10 action, is expected to be released soon.
