Murfreesboro is getting a new taco joint — with a local flair — in September - The Daily News Journal

Murfreesboro is getting a new taco joint at 521 N.W. Broad St., the former location for Dog Haus Biergarten.

The Local Taco should be open by mid-September, confirmed William "Billy" Beels, vice president of culinary and culture for the Middle Tennessee-based restaurant chain.

These tacos, Beels assured, are not like any you've ever had.

"We do Southern tacos and fresh margaritas. All our tacos have a 'from-the-South' influence," said Beels, a native of Rutherford County. "And turnip greens, too."

Nashville Hot Chicken, spicy fried shrimp, Southern fried and a barbecue pork tacos are the most popular. If you can't decide, order all 10 for a special price and presented with a Local Taco flair.

Local Taco has plenty of Tex-Mex on the menu as well. Other popular items include the Mexi Tots, which are mashed potato balls filled with cheese, scallions and spices and fried, as well as street corn — on or off the cobb — and borracho beans.

Healthier options include the concinero salad made with black beans and rice, and vegetarian tacos and quesadillas.

And everything is made in house.

"We fresh-squeeze all the lime juice and make cocktails from scratch. We're pretty much a scratch kitchen. We make all our own sauces, smoke all of our own meats," Beels said.

Appetizers start out at $3.50 and tacos are $4 each, with combination platters available for $10 to $14. Beels said customer service will be a priority, too. After you order your meal at the counter, there will be servers checking on customers.

Local is part of the name for a reason, Beels said.

"We have a local flair in whatever community we're in," he said.

The Riverdale High School graduate said The Local Taco has been looking to expand to Rutherford County. So when Dog Haus closed in February, just before the pandemic, the company made a move. It was perfect, he said.

The dining room seats around 70, a size Beels said fits into the restaurant's more intimate vibe. Garage doors open onto a 30-seat covered patio and there's also a full-service bar.

The Local Taco first opened in Sylvan Park on Murphy Road in Nashville a decade ago, but that location closed last summer. Next to open was Brentwood and it remains a "flagship" for the company, and there's another in Florence, Alabama.

Hours at The Local Taco in Murfreesboro are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and Sunday; and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Follow them on Facebook at facebook.com/local.taco.
