Digi International, a provider of Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity products and services, has announced the latest release of Digi Remote Manager, its cloud-based device- and network-management platform. According to the company, the updated solution is intended to simplify device deployment and maintenance, ensure network uptime and security, and provide reliable network management so that network teams need not change their business processes in order to accommodate rigid tools. The platform allows users to manage IoT devices and networks in any environment from anywhere around the world, the company reports.

Digi Remote Manager can support applications ranging from Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and branch connectivity to intelligent traffic management and more, utilizing dispersed IoT devices as a holistic network. Users can create groups of devices and remotely configure them by group identification rather than by product type. Therefore, the company explains, the same device types can be programmed in different ways without requiring manual configurations on individual devices. The ability to configure device groups offers greater control to network managers, Digi International explains, regardless of device type.

Custom scripts, such as Python, can be uploaded to geographically dispersed devices for the purpose of on-device intelligence. Remote access to non-IP edge devices, such as sensors, via the routers to which they're connected expands the array of devices that can be managed via the platform. Users can create sub-accounts that can be managed from a parent account, the owner of which can restrict which devices sub-account users can access.

Task-automation and task-scheduling features enable users to optimize their time and improve operational efficiency, according to the company. Task automation allows users to create a configuration for a group of devices that will then be automatically pushed to all devices within that group, enabling pre-validation of configurations and reducing the cost of maintaining a deployment. Task scheduling offers the ability to pre-program functions to run at a later time, easing the burden on network engineers and managers while ensuring network functionality.

The system's API Explorer function allows users to browse and test hundreds of application programming interfaces in a live environment on the platform, and to validate that coding works before it is taken live throughout a network. Digi Remote Manager APIs can integrate and run third-party applications, both cloud-based and on premises, to run data rules and batches, import and export data, and execute reports to provide insight into device deployments.

The platform provides more than 175 controls to protect data and devices, the company reports, and to maintain compliance with the ISO 27002 standard's ISMS, NERC's critical infrastructure protection (CIP) guidance, the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA)'s Cloud Controls Matrix, and relevant HIPAA and NIST standards. Reporting options and custom alerts give users a library of reports that they can pull to meet their needs, while alerts are customizable to ensure that specific performance levels are maintained and that the network is functioning properly.

"Businesses won't be able to realize the full value of their IoT initiatives if they are not focused on maximizing [their] entire network of devices," said Brian Kirkendall, Digi International's VP of product management, in a prepared statement. "Digi Remote Manager transforms the way that businesses are able to think about and deploy their projects. From industry-leading security software to maximized uptime and simplified operations, we help build a secure and valuable network that gives those businesses the peace of mind that operations are within compliance without the need for elaborate solutions."

ElectriCities, an organization that provides technical services to support power throughout North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, uses Digi Remote Manager to maintain a network spanning thousands of square miles, and to collect data from meters, generators and telemetry equipment. "I was here before Digi Remote Manager, so I can speak directly to the difference that it has made in terms of both saving costs and providing new value," said John Coates, ElectriCities' lead systems coordinator, in the prepared statement. "Our ability to remotely maintain our network, collect data and optimize our systems with on-device intelligence has allowed us to grow and maximize our output to best serve our members."
